I was snickering at your description of making the shepherd's pie while your SIL visited. I also have a SIL who I can...not...stand...so I completely understand. My SIL is just plain out a snooty snob who thinks she's better than everyone else. Why do you dislike your SIL?

I'm glad the toe is behaving for the most part. Walking impediments are brutal! Have you contacted a chiropractor about the trigeminal neuralgia? Most of them are more than willing to have a sit down with you and talk with you about it if you have concerns about treatment. If you decide to go to one let me know and I would be happy to have hubby look them up in your area and make a suggestion. He knows or knows of, a lot of chiropractors in North America. He would make sure you went to a stand up chiropractor.

Hey M2M, sorry to hear things are a bit topsy turvy at the moment - two steps forward and one back. But, as ever, you are dealing with it like a trooper.

Good to hear of your training for ATY; my year being home-based has not been as good for my exercise plans as I intended, too much bad weather at the start of being home-based has caused me to settle for some very bad habits that have proven difficult to undo, and will not likely stand much chance over another winter. However, hopefully keeping up with your diary will inspire me out more often than might happen otherwise.

Looking forward to catching up Smile

LOL - maybe that that is just the nature of SIL's? No wait, that means I'd be the icky one in reverse... Eek, I hope not! She is just such a know-it-all. She has a LOUD opinion on everything and is sure she always knows the best or right way to do anything. I just try and stay busy doing something/anything when she is around so I only have minimal input to the conversation. She can pretty much carry the entire conversation anyway.

I'd happily take a recommendation for a chiropractor in the area. [Flagstaff, Arizona) I've an idea I'll be exploring a few options around this problem and I don't have a lot of faith in my doc. Is that a terrible thing to say? Maybe I haven't really given her a chance; I haven't had much tricky or hard to diagnose go wrong in the years I've known her.

Got in a nice, if cold, midday walk on campus yesterday. With the temp right at the freezing mark and windchill, I'd guess it was single digitsF/-teensC. I was glad I had ear covers and gloves.

Had a small bureaucratic win too, unexpected and very welcome.
Truck repair was done on time and a teensy bit less expensive than I expected. Of course, they found and recommended another repair... will wait on that one for a bit.

Note from my brother in law asking about the shepherd's pie I was making on Sunday when they visited... it did turn out well, I had it yesterday.

Worked out in the gym this morning as it was just too cold outside. Did some fast feet cardio which is always good for my mood, then some lunges on the bosu and some light weights/core work.
PT was intense. I took in prints of the recent x rays... Dan noted the lack of curve in my neck vertebra. We talked about next steps... not sure seeing my family doc is of much value although I've already started down that path. I could just self-refer to a specialist and might. He gave me his recommendation. I need to do something, I was in nasty pain most of the day yesterday. Took a benadryl last night to ensure I slept and I did sleep fairly well.

Happy to hear the car repair came in slightly under expected. Always a bonus.

Interesting about your neck. When DD had her concussion last year, her neck was the same. The recommendation from her PT profs who are all PT’s was to use a towel and take it around your neck, like you were going to sling it there to go to the pool. Then pull on the ends so it’s pulling on the middle of your neck to pull it toward your front, while keeping your head still. Not sure if you PT had you try that.

Hoping you can get some answers soon.

Funny that your BIL asked for the Shepherd's Pie recipe.

Glad you are focusing on your pain to find some answers/solutions. It seems to be a difficult pattern running from one test/idea to the next.

Yea on the bureaucratic win; having worked in the public sphere most of my life I know it felt good.

Stay warm. haha

Hi, M2M! Here is the chiro hubby would recommend. He seems like a straight chiropractor who actually cares about his patients.

I hope that helps!

Took some positive steps today - going this afternoon to have my head examined, so to speak. The radiology office had a cancellation so I'm going to get the MRI. Scheduled an appointment with a doc next Wednesday in hopes of doing something more proactive regarding this nerve thing.

Braved temps in the teens this morning (14F/-10C) to hike Shoe Hill. Bright sunshine was such a treat. I had layered my top half well, but my legs were cold in thin athletic pants. Had planned to do a midday walk to WF/REI, but nixed that because I'll be leaving early for the MRI appointment.

[Likely] last day of taking T to appointments Friday, I think he will be driving by the next appointment at the end of the month. I know we both hope that is the case.

Weekend plans include chopping wood, long hike, and making a good shopping list for Turkey day cooking. It will just be the 2 of us, but I still like to make our traditional favs.

I do hope you find what is causing the pain. That's the worst kind of distraction. With all the exams, I hope they turn up something and you can begin to resolve the issue permanently.
Good to read T is progressing , although slowly. Missing cherished activities is frustrating while serving as a grand motivator.

How was the MRI? When do you get the results? Was it as weird or strange as many people say an MRI makes them feel? I know many people feel sort of trapped. I've never had one so I am curious. I was offered an MRI of my brain a few years ago but decided against it. Long story. What is it that they are looking for with the MRI? I know you've talked about nerve pain but I am referring to what the doctors think it might be.

Also, have you ever been tested for Lyme?

Thanks for the many good wishes. The MRI was fine, no contrast was ordered, so no IV was needed. I'm not claustrophobic so being held in place with what was basically a plastic case around my head and being inside a white tube didn't cause me any distress - I closed my eyes and utilized the breathing exercises I've been doing with the nighttime guided imagery. I can imagine the physical situation would be uncomfortable for many. The noise is unpleasant, the tech said something about a "jack hammer". Not that bad! When she asked about music, I went with 80's alternative so the strangest bit was probably trying to sort out old familiar songs I could barely hear with the music beat intertwined with the noise of the machine. Anyway, it gave my brain something to work on.

Ontario, we think the nerve pain (likely CN7) is from an impingement, so the imaging is looking at my neck and skull trying to see if anything is visible that is causing the problem. There is definitely some degeneration in my vertebra and my neck vertebra don't curve in the "normal" way. I can trigger the pain and get (some) relief from it based on my head/neck position and how tight certain muscles are near my scapula and through my neck. I have MD appointments this week and next (different docs).

Re: Still on the move... Meant2Move's journal

Post by Meant2Move on Mon Nov 19, 2018 2:53 pm

Had a good weekend overall. Friday was a quiet day. T's PT appointment was midday instead of in the morning. I spent some time catching up exercise logs - hadn't touched those since early September so lots of weight and exercise to catch-up. Still need to add in thoughts and events tied to the visit with my parents, T's surgery, and whatever else is/has been going on. After the PT and doing some errands, the day was shot, we got home at dusk, so no exercise. Some days are like that...

Saturday I did a Shoe Hill Loop early to get that done, walked around the property with T, and puttered about doing various chores. It was a lovely autumn day. Luca had skipped the past 3 nights and we were quite worried about her, so it was a relief to have her show up for dinner.

Sunday, I did another ATY training hike. We had a lazy morning so I was late to start. That worked well as I was out in the warmest part of the day - less need for layers is welcome. My course was pretty loosely defined, so having the beacon on Strava was nice, T knew where I was without my having set a firm course, and I could decide as I went whether to explore or take a "known" way. It was a treat to cover a lot of ground and not see other people until the end when I was on a more traveled road (passed by 2 vehicles - not a hoard by any means!). Route ended up being 15 miles.

Got home to chop firewood for the week, then made dinner before relaxing with T.

Glad you are researching your facial/neck issues. Have to start somewhere. Sometimes a pain.

Glad Luca came back.

Is T able to drive now that the last PT appointment has occurred. I think it will make him feel good inside. Smile

Got in a lovely campus walk today, a bit chilly, but nice sunshine and I managed to draw out a few smiles. 3.8 miles and a quick stop at Sprouts - crazed holiday shoppers already. I'm doing most of mine on Wednesday I think, although I may pop into WF to get some turkey pieces Tuesday just to be sure.

Got a call from my PCP office asking me to come in before the holiday, guess it is to discuss the imaging results. I'll be curious to hear what she thinks vs the doc I'll see on Wednesday. My PT appointment got rescheduled to Tuesday as well.

Good timing by your PCP office. Sounds like things are falling into place. Hoping for good news and ease of treatment.

I may end up shopping today during the day...such a luxury and the crowds will still be awful, I bet.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, you, T, Fat Cat and Luca

Re: Still on the move... Meant2Move's journal

Post by Meant2Move on Wed Nov 21, 2018 5:48 pm

Tuesday rather devolved into the medical mystery tour... I had 2 different times on calendars related to my PT appointment, and no one answered when I called the office, so I leapt up, grabbed my purse and walked to the office - bit of a hill climb, only to find that I had the later appointment. No worries, walked down and around to the credit union to deposit a check, then back to the office for PT.

We kind of agreed that while the PT is good and is loosening up some tight muscles and trigger points, it really isn't solving the problem. Still, I have weekly appointments scheduled through December and I think I'll keep them.

Next, went down the hill, stopped for a bottle of water when I realized I hadn't drunk nearly enough, then popped into a store to use up some store "cash" that was to expire. Grabbed some lunch, then walked to the MD office. Had to wait ages as it seemed several afternoon slots were double booked. Hate that.

The MRI results didn't point to anything that is causing the nerve pain, but did raise some other questions/concerns so a follow-up process with contrast and another kind of imaging were suggested. What's not to love about that? Testing always leads to more testing. But, I've scheduled it just in case. Doc is worried and seems to be making what seems to me to be an iffy link. It is my brain, which I need, so I'll follow through.

Made it back to the office, day pretty well shot after something like 6.5 miles. I loved the walking obviously, the other stuff, not so much.

The appointment this morning didn't lead anywhere aside from a suggesting that my next step should be a neurologist. And a prescription for a drug. When the doc says "don't google the side effects" one worries. I have not done so. I am also undecided about picking up the prescription, but I probably will.

Nicer walk today as instead of cool and cloudy (Tuesday weather) today offered bright sunshine and a warmer temperature. Made my way to WF to buy turkey parts. T was relieved when I sent a text to say I had been successful. He was worried I had waited too long and there wouldn't be any turkey left.

I'm about ready to call it a day and go brave the stores for the rest of the stuff needed for the weekend cooking extravaganza. Aside from eating until we drop, I hope to get in another long training hike and maybe come to town for a swim with my guy.

Oh, he successfully drove himself to town yesterday. He was very excited and it was a huge boost to his mood.

I'll likely be offline until next week. Wishing all who celebrate a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Among the things I am grateful for is the wonderful group of people who are here.

Happy Thanksgiving M2M - you may not get this until you get back, but I am very thankful for you.

I hope the situation with the nerves resovle themselves without further testing.

I’m curious as to the drug they prescribed.

So happy to hear T got out driving and was able to feel more human again.

Huge hugs
