Re: COVID-19 news & status
You know what I think is ridiculous? ......that liquor stores are still open despite other businesses being forced to close. Really? How counterintuitive.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
Well some states are calling them essential. I guess many think they are needed for sanity.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
We go under "Stay at Home" order tonight at 11:59. Doesn't look like much of a change to my eye from where we already are. Latest stats in OH are 351 cases, 83 hospitalized, 3 dead. NE Oh, around Cleveland is still the hot spot here.
Essentially our Stay at Home order is to identify businesses that should be closed. The FAQ on the web page about it could just say: Use common sense, don't go anywhere unless necessary, work at home if possible, avoid gatherings. No enforcement provisions at all, nobody is checking (yet) to make sure you are complying.

GAH! Damn it! The Premier of Ontario (like your governors in the USA) just did a news conference. Effective tomorrow ALL non-essential services are shut down. In short EVERYONE has to stay home. The list of what "he" deems essential comes out tomorrow. I guess hubby and I will know sometime tomorrow if our office is deemed "essential". This is ridiculous.
He also confirmed the the kids will not be returning to school on April 6th as last stated. They are extending the time off school indefinitely. Boy, oh, boy!

By the way....I was talking to someone about the liquor stores being open and deemed essential. Apparently this is because alcohol addiction that leads to severe withdrawal will force those people into ERs and clog up the already busy health care services. And, in our ridiculous PC world it's a disease and we must make "treatment", AKA alcohol, available. This info came from an addiction counselor.

This is something interesting by Bruce Lipton. If you're not familiar with him he has a PhD in cell biology......
********************************************************
For those of you who didn't social distance and self quarantine last year.
A nice perspective on the Coronavirus scare from best selling author (Biology of belief), sought out speaker and cellular biologist Bruce Lipton. This perspective is filled with Rational thought & calm. I sincerely hope this lightens your day & elevates you IMMUNE SYSTEM, by decreasing worry & unnecessary stress.
From Bruce Lipton phD
• An interesting perspective on coronavirus
The world is currently gripped in fear of the scary coronavirus. Let’s first get one fact clear: If you have ever had a cold or flu in your life, odds are that it was the result of a coronavirus infection. Yes, coronaviruses cause colds.
But, we are being programmed with the belief that this particular cold virus is “deadly.” This fear has shut down concerts, conferences, and major public events all over the world. The fear has led to quarantines and closing down of international travel. It has even led to a major scarcity of toilet paper in Australia [and America] were concerned citizens emptied the shelves of this commodity in anticipation that they will be walled up in their homes with this infection.
First, how deadly is this version of the virus? Yes, there have been corona-related deaths reported with the statistics suggesting that ~2% of the infected population dies. Wow! That number is almost 1% more deaths than are attributed to any conventional flu the world experiences. What is misleading is the fear that everyone who carries this virus may die from their cold. This is simply untrue! The health of almost all the victims of this coronavirus was already compromised before they were infected.
For example, the following information was provided by the news in regard to the 6 patients that died of the virus in the state of Washington last week:
Six people have died in Washington and health officials have identified 18 cases. Four of the cases in King County were linked to the Life Care nursing facility in Kirkland. More than 50 residents and staff at the facility are being tested.
The deaths announced Monday, according to health officials, included:
-A male in his 70s, who lived at LifeCare. He had underlying health conditions and died Sunday.
-A female resident of LifeCare in her 70s. She also had underlying health conditions and died Sunday.
-A woman in her 80s, who was already reported as in critical condition at EvergreenHealth, died Sunday.
-A Snohomish County resident at EvergreenHealth also died but details of that patient have not been given.
Two previously reported deaths included a man in his 70s who had underlying health conditions and had been a resident of LifeCare. He died at EvergreenHealth on Feb. 29. The other was a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions. He was admitted with serious respiratory issues and tested positive for the virus. He died at EvergreenHealth Medical Center in Kirkland.
As emphasized in this report, the health of all those that died with the coronavirus was already compromised. Healthy people get cold and flu symptoms, while those already sick and near death’s door may experience the “Grim Reaper” when infected by the virus. True, sick people are more vulnerable to the virus; healthy people really have nothing to fear.
As presented in The Biology of Belief, stress is responsible for up to 90% of illness, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. When an individual is in stress, the release of stress hormones (e.g., cortisol) shuts down the immune system to conserve the body’s energy for running away from the perceived stressor, that proverbial “saber-toothed tiger.” Stress hormones are so effective at compromising the immune system, that physicians therapeutically provide recipients of organ transplants with stress hormones to prevent their immune system from rejecting the foreign implant.
The conclusion is clear: The fear of the coronavirus is more deadly than the virus itself!
The media (perhaps in conjunction with the pharmaceutical industry) is compromising people’s health using the fear card! This is the result of negative thinking (the nocebo effect) which is the complete opposite of the placebo effect manifest through positive thinking! If you make efforts to stay healthy, with good nutrition, exercise, taking vitamins and supplements, and more importantly, avoiding stress (e.g., the “fear” of the virus), even if you do get infected with the virus, you will likely only end up with a cold and/or slight fever.
If you are someone with a compromised immune system, it is supportive to surround yourself with loving family and friends, nature, and positive thoughts as well as any other nutrition and vitamins that you may already be taking for your health and wellbeing. Following your intuition about what is best for you is key! The point here is that no matter who you are and what your state of health, you will only benefit from steering clear of the fear and supporting yourself in whatever way feels best to you.
Please remember the truth of quantum physics, the most valid of all sciences on the planet: Consciousness is creating your life experiences! Are you being conscious of disease … or of health? Wishing you all Health, Happiness and Harmony.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
Thanks for sharing this Ontario. Love what he says, and pretty much my thinking, although having 12 others depend on you can change the stress response a bit. The fear and panic the media is putting out and the shuttering of most things really puts a burden on small businesses. I’m more worried about having to lay people off than of the virus. So I’ve got to get my mind straight about that so I’m not stressed.
Hope you can stay open.

Sadly, I believe there may be something in this. If alcohol is already a person's means of coping with life, then withdrawing it forcibly at this time is likely to do more harm than good. I'd be pretty cranky without my daily cuppa tea, but my life is not so stressful that I wouldn't cope. Not so for many.

Best Buy sent an email y'day, announcing that they are open for biz, and the best way to shop with them is on-line, then go to the store for pick-up. They will have their employees being runners between cars in the parking lot and their orders in the store. Interesting.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
Indeed it is. It makes you wonder if, at the very start of this mess, Prez Trump, our state govs, and your Canadian equivalents had all gone on the tube and told everyone that we had a serious health issue coming at us and it was imperative that people observe the "6 foot rule." then turn the podium over to the health 'spurts to provide technical advice on what to do and how to do it. No mandated shutdowns, closures, etc. Just rely on the public and business to have enough sense to manage things. My nickel is that we would be way far ahead of the game today, not much difference in the sickness picture, but economically much better.
I do think cutting air and sea transport from other nations is/was a good idea, and also slamming the land borders tightly shut for the duration. No point in importing trouble from elsewhere.

I was happy to hear Best Buy's info. I can still take my computer there; they'll pick it up and return it at the curb.
My computer is fine but I cannot keep trying to finish the online form that uses .pdfs. No driver for the printer!
It may come to a new printer. Mine is great but ancient.

I agree Rig and gee, people would not have been able to hoard things that way. Definitely would have been better for the economy.
Yes, it’s a good thing DD got out of dodge yesterday before the travel ban last night.
Although folks around here are asking what’s the difference from what we were doing. Well now you can get a fine. Just crazy stuff.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
Please don’t read that article above and think you are safe and this is being overblown. It is a horrible article with some dangerously inaccurate and misleading information. MERS is a Coronavirus too and it is fatal roughly 65% of the time. Covid-19 is far more serious than the flu or a cold. Even if we assume a rate of death of 1-2% for the cord-19 on average, the flu has a fatality rate of .1% , which is significantly less. Additionally, coved-19 is far more contagious than most Coronaviruses. In the US, this is hitting younger people harder than it appears to have in other countries, so don’t get complacent just because you don’t think you are at risk. Don’t panic but use common sense. And verify all the information you read, even here. Even what I just wrote.
Ps. If you want to know how bad this can be here, watch or read interviews with Italian doctors that had to make the decision to save ventilators for younger people and sedated older people so they could die painlessly because they did not have enough ventilators. And they had more vents per capital then we do.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
I'm not buying into the hype. I did some fact checking a few days ago and this is pertinent:
Something to ponder with regard to epicenters of the virus in other countries being discussed on the news:
Bergamo province, Italy - 402 people per square kilometer
Hubei province, China - 314 people per square kilometer
Ontario, Canada - 14 people per square kilometer
I refuse to be thrown into panic mode.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
FWIW:
My understanding is that right now the death rate for CV19 is based on # deaths vs confirmed cases.
The death rate for the "regular" flu is based on estimated deaths vs estimated cases, using statistical models of some sort, so who knows what it really is.
CDC says Last year's estimated deaths from flu was 80,000. didn't see the rate. Previous years run from 13K-56K.
https://www.statnews.com/2018/09/26/cdc-us-flu-deaths-winter/
Yes, I'm shocked beyond words that the flu vaccine didn't work very well. I think that's something like 20-30 years in a row it didn't work very well. But just wait, CV19 vaccine for next year will likely be available, and almost by definition, it will likely be rushed through the approval cycle with questionable testing. But no worries, with the way it is going it may be mandatory. Roll up your sleeve and get your <posterior> in line.

From article, (my bold) wrote:Last fall and winter, the U.S. went through one of the most severe flu seasons in recent memory. It was driven by a kind of flu that tends to put more people in the hospital and cause more deaths, particularly among young children and the elderly.
The season peaked in early February. It was mostly over by the end of March, although some flu continued to circulate.
Making a bad year worse, the flu vaccine didn’t work very well. Experts nevertheless say vaccination is still worth it, because it makes illnesses less severe and save lives.
“I’d like to see more people get vaccinated,” Redfield told the AP at an event in New York. “We lost 80,000 people last year to the flu.”
CDC officials do not have exact counts of how many people die from flu each year. Flu is so common that not all flu cases are reported, and flu is not always listed on death certificates. So the CDC uses statistical models, which are periodically revised, to make estimates.
Fatal complications from the flu can include pneumonia, stroke and heart attack.

Re: COVID-19 news & status
Ontario I was just talking about this with someone today. NYC has it bad, but they also have a ton of people per mile/kilometer. Didn’t look up the number. And in the US, it seems areas that want to have sanctuary cities are being hit hard and while they don’t want to follow US law, they want the feds to get them help yesterday.
Rig I was finding the same thing when I went hunting for Flu statistics. We are not supposed to compare - ok, however I think most people just want to compare death rates since this is being so hyped. It’s kind of convenient for them they don’t have actual numbers.
